Se7en

In the opening sequence of se7en the picture is mainly in a sepia tone surrounded by a thick black surrounding. Which introduces a boxed in feeling, in which freedom is not present, therefore the subject of the unknown is formed.

The hand written font indicates that what is going to happen has been planned by a human to harm or perhaps remove the existence of other humans.

As the name depicts a thriller is designed to “thrill” and from the outset, the viewer's senses are programmed to fall into adventure mode. This is achieved by the use of dark images of anticipated scenes of either horror or terror and most definitely suspense. This is reinforced by the use of low dark music which intensifies the excitement which is designed to parallel the expected rise in apprehension for the viewer.

Also the credits are written in a bright white, seemingly hand-written font to emphasise the human nature of the characters as opposed to a machine created font.

These are all indicators that violence plays a strong part in the film. At the end of the opening sequence, the viewer is hooked and needs to see the consequences or conclusions of the anticipated actions.

There are several clues that advocate this theory such as the character in the opening blacking out the eyes of a picture, the sewing together of skin parts, the images of injured people and a razor-blade which could cause physical harm.
