American Psycho
In the opening sequence of American Psycho, the year is set with the music used (new order- true faith), from the music the audience is aware of the epoch which is the 1980’s. This is further reinforced by the costume of the characters, as they are dressed in stereotypical 80’s fashion.
The location is established by a shot of the venue which appears to be a dancing club/disco. The dim lighting shows that the thriller starts at night time, therefore the audience instantly anticipates a strange event is going to happen.
The viewer is introduced to the main character. The character is seemingly normal and holds no significance, however, in the opening scene, his encounter with a barmaid excites the audiences perception of him.
A close up shot shows that the character has a smile on his face as he insults the barmaid by using graphic and gory language.
The smile alerts the audience of his character, as the conventional person would express anger or annoyance physically, however by going against the norms of emotion the character creates an unnerving atmosphere.
