Question 3) what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A distribution company is an organisation which deals with the marketing and release of a film in cinemas or home viewing i.e. television or DVD/Blu-ray.
Small distribution companies such as ‘Shorts TV’ have been known for distributing films such as ‘Beyond that wasteland’ or ‘Salar’. This company could distribute my film as it works with multiple small film-makers and focusing on short films.
Due to the size of my film it is unlikely that it would be distributed internationally as this could be quite costly. Therefore, ‘Sacrifice’ has a higher chance of being distributed from a UK based company. Artificial eye is uk based distribution company which releases films in cinema and for domestic use (blu-ray or DVD). My film could possibly be released by this company as it is situated in the UK, and the target audience for my preliminary and main are both based on research centred around british viewers.
Film distribution is important when releasing a film as it the distribution source could allow the film to gain more viewers as well as earn a profit from their film. Licensing agreements is a legally-binding contract made between the film maker and the distribution company which outlines the terms and agreements of the organisation which the film maker must agree to in order to have their film distributed by the organisation.
When deciding on a distribution company numerous factors have to be considered; the length of the film, the budget, the likelihood of popularity and the target audience.
