Lighting and colours:
Cooper uses bright wording in contrast to the black background to illuminate its significance. Unlike a horror thriller, the colours used for this film’s opening sequence are mainly calming tones such as light blue and slight greyish colouring, however in this thriller the subgenre of crime thriller is apparent because of the mix between dark and light tones. The colour presents mystery and an aura of taciturnity.

Editing:

The negotiator uses transitions such as quick shots and blur.

Camera Movement:

Cooper mainly uses zooms in this opening sequence, especially on the characters to create an enigmatic effect. The audience becomes suspicious of the characters as their attention is pin-pointed on them.

In this scene, we can see an authoritative figure; this is shown through the use of uniform in the scene, this reinforces the theme of crime.

In this particular shot, the lighting focuses on the two characters, however by using a mid-shot as well as the position the audience are left in suspense. The focus is on the left of the screen but the wide-shot camera angle leaves a daunting dark space, thus an element of mystery is introduced.
