Lighting and colours:

The film begins with a simplistic opening, the genre of thriller is apparent as the typography uses thriller colours such as red to represent an idea of blood and gore in addition to a black background being used to highlight the dark tones of the film. Furthermore, the placement of the words illuminates the background, this formulates a domineering effect on the audience as the darkness seems overpowering.

Camera angles:
The establishing shot uses a wide shot, to fully portray the characters in the scene. By using this, the audience can clearly see the vast amount of characters in the shot.  The camera angle is behind an obstacle which depicts the theme of mystery, from this angle it presents an on looking view and therefore the audience becomes ostracised from the scene thus heightening their intrigue.

Camera movements:
Quick shots are used to jump from scene to scene; the fast-pace shots excite the viewer by adding an element of shock and surprise. The brevity of each scene attracts the audience’s attention by creating mystery. The audience will be wondering what happens next and so they’re captivated by the film.

Sound:

The effect of the voice-over illustrates the tone of the film, the interview style audio suggests a government theme.

The diegetic music in the opening adds a humorous tone as it has an uplifting western style, in contrast to the images used in the scenes.
Cooper uses sound effects such as screams to add the element of fear.

Cooper uses the binary opposition technique in this scene to fascinate the audience. The dark areas create mystery, while the lighted areas convey a theme of isolation, due to the wide amount of empty space.

The first establishing shot in the opening sequence uses a sepia tone, as this is usually associated with the past; this presents a theme of age. This theme is further advocated by the use of greyscale, in this scene of the opening. Cooper uses different pigment effects to emphasise on the shots; this contrast in shots creates suspense as it uses such a wide range.

Close ups are used to shock the audience. This gory close up of a character excites the viewer’s emotions; the audience would instinctively display feelings of disgust or fear, hence the opening sequence sets the nature of the film.  “ A great title sequence sets an expectation” – Kyle Cooper. The target audience for his films would be people who are interested in the horror-thriller subgenre.
