Bullit

The opening credits of the film Bullit, reveal the general characteristics that are associated with action thrillers; there is suspense, music which builds in tempo and the opening pictures are in monochrome mixed with bright colours.

Camera movement is used to introduce the setting of Chicago, which is a point of importance. The writing is in bold colours so the audience’s attention is automatically fixed in the point.

“Chicago daily news” sets the theme of a media/journalistic influence, later in the opening sequence; we see a mug with Chicago written on it, next to it is a cup of bright yellow pencils which support the idea of media influence.

Of note is the sequence of machinery in the opening scenes, this is of importance as we are introduced to a group of characters from a low angle, with lighting which gives a robotic effect. This is more likely to attract a mainly young male audience because of the scenes of violence, weapons, car chases, the technology of the time i.e. cassettes

In addition, the protagonists are mainly male.  Therefore, the excitement of the opening scene would lure the audience to anticipate more action which induces the viewer to watch the film.
