Light can used in a variety of methods such as using gels, creating shadows and portraying the time of day (dim light for night and bright lights for day) .

Lighting is used to introduce the scene by gradually exposing the character.

The sudden brightness of the light draws the audience's attention to the facial expression of the character. as well as her movement which is the point of focus in the scene. 

The lighting used in a thriller can build tension in a scene, as well as intensify a shocking scene.
